How Do We Choose a Siding With You?

We choose a siding with you by starting at the house rather than a sample board: its age, its style, its street and how hard the weather hits each side. A 1970s ranch on a wooded inland lot and a shingled cottage facing open water want different walls, and we name the one we would put on yours.

Vinyl siding replacement is our usual answer, since vinyl fits most budgets and most Maine houses when it hangs over a well-flashed wall. James Hardie fiber cement earns its price where a wall takes salt spray, and LP SmartSide gives an inland house the painted-board look for a little less per square.

Cedar shingles suit the capes and cottages that wore them originally. Where a house sits in a historic district, the town's design rules shape the choice too, and we read them before anyone signs.

What Happens If You Are Not Sure Which Siding Fits?

If you are not sure which siding fits, send the estimate request anyway and pick the not-sure option on the material question. The material gets settled at the visit, after we have seen the walls.

We note the old siding, any paint on clapboards from before 1978 and any cement shingles. Then we lay out two options in writing, with the per-square difference between them.

Sometimes the honest answer is a repair matched to the old wall instead of new siding, and we say so when it is. Nothing gets ordered until you hold a written price and a signed contract.

Which siding should your house get?

Tell us the town and what the walls are wearing now. We look at the wall first, then put the scope and the price in writing.
